Forklift Truck Training Course
Operators should undergo training on an industrial-powered lift truck, or forklift in order to be given forklift operator certification. The training course must be specific to the forklift attachments and type which you will be utilizing on the job. Training must also reflect the environment wherein you will be working. Forklift safety should be a main concern for both the operator trainee and the trainer.
General Qualifications
Prior to assuming any operator duties, all forklift drivers should undergo training and certification. Basic credentials for driving a forklift include an age minimum of eighteen years and the physical capacity to safely control and operate the unit.
Pedestrian Safety
The top concern of any forklift driver must be the safety of pedestrians. Pedestrians in the vicinity of the forklift are at risk of death or injury from getting hit by the machinery or its attachments. Pedestrians always have the right of way, and forklift operators should honk their horns when working at intersections or crosswalks or near pedestrians.
Weather Conditions
Many mishaps involving forklifts happen at loading docks. These areas become dangerous if rain leaks in through open dock doors making the floor extremely slippery. Wet floor conditions create a hazard and operators should be aware of potential hazards when working in loading dock areas.
Certification
Certification programs for forklift drivers include both classroom instruction and practical training that could be tailored for the particular needs of each work setting. Training should be undertaken on the type of forklift and attachments which will be used by the trainee in the workplace.
Accidents
On average, there is around 100 deaths attributed to forklift accidents, while more than 100,000 are injured by forklifts. Nearly all of these accidents could be prevented with attention to safety and proper operator training.

Telescopic Forklifts
Telescopic forklift models are equipped with a pronged lift on an arm that extends over the top of the truck providing versatility and great height. The arm, or crane, is called a telescopic boom. The boom allows the operator to maintain a high degree of control while lifting the cargo to great heights. Standard forklifts aren't able to move the load towards and away from the cab of the forklift, whereas a telescopic forklift allows that movement. The telescopic forklift is normally utilized in both construction and agriculture. It is better for applications where greater lift and control is required.
In cases requiring high volume carton handling, hydraulic attachments called forklift carton clamp attachments are better. The attachment has arm pads with four way reversible rubber linings that allow the operator to utilize uniform clamping force when picking up a cargo. It comes with a backrest which protects the loads from damage.
A slip sheet attachment fits onto a slip sheet forklift. It is used for storing systems that don't utilize pallets. The attachment clamps onto the slip sheet and pulls it onto the forklift forks. This type of system is useful for intra-corporate deliveries and for overseas shipments.
A lift platform which is designed to raise employees is referred to as a Man Basket. It attaches to the forklift forks and a strap or chain is utilized to attach the basket to the forklift carriage. The platform has railings to protect the employees from falling to the ground. Brackets on the platform are utilized for fastening the safety harness of the worker.
